On our last evening in Rockland, we were entertained by a long-lasting thunderstorm - you can seek the clouds moving in on us while we attended the member event at the yacht club. What a show! However it cleared the humidity within the first hour of the storm and it has been great since. The member event was wonderful - good food, great dessert, and free beverages! We met the staff at Safe Harbor Rockland, and a few Safe Harbor members who offered a few tidbits of info about the various yacht clubs along the Atlantic coast.
Safe Harbor Rockland is a lovely place to spend a few nights; Chris, the dock master, could not do enough for us to ensure our stay was comfortable. Highly recommend this as a stop on anybody’s journey!
My CowBuoy living his best Life - listening to his tunes while dodging lobster buoys!! And there a LOT of lobster buoys out here!
The lighthouses along this coast are plentiful and quaint. We’ve seen so many of them - fascinating.
We changed our minds about our destination after listening to Gene, from Ohio, sing the praises of Harpswell, Maine (halfway to Portsmouth). Given this is a marathon, not a sprint, we decided to visit and see if we agreed with his assessment.
A monolith structure at the mouth of Harpswell waterway - interesting!
Some fishermen pulling traps along the way into Harpswell.
Quahog Bay
The run to Harpswell was uneventful - we arrived in ~ 5 hours. Most of it was done within the protection of many islands, hence the calmer waters. The sun eventually poked through and we moored up without issue. The yacht club is on Quahog Bay, a quiet enclave at the end of Harpswell Island Road. Little did we know how quiet. The marina attendant came out to greet us and ensure we were moored satisfactorialy. However, we were too late for the restaurant (closed at 3PM), there was no provisioning store, and the marina office closed at 5PM. By the time Greg and Jason arrived by dinghy, all was closed up so not even any ice!
Plan B - we had supper on the boat, a nice bottle of red wine (no ice required), and watched the hockey game on Greg’s iPad. Highlight of the night is that Edmonton did it again and we are looking forward to Game 7!!
Although quieter than we were expecting, Harpswell was a safe, sheltered spot to spend the night. There was some rainfall, but overall a cool, comfortable sleep.
So, we are off today, hoping to make it to Salem, Massachusetts tonight. More about that later!
I appreciate the time you are taking to make these blog posts. It is nice to follow along with you on your "marathon".
